GDC Skills for IB Maths: The Calculator Features That Win Marks in Paper 2

Owning a graphic display calculator is not the same as using it well. The GDC features every IB maths student should master, how to write GDC working so the markscheme rewards it, the settings that cause silent errors, and how to practise.

GDC Skills for IB Maths: The Calculator Features That Win Marks in Paper 2

In IB maths, the graphic display calculator (GDC) is not optional. All AI papers require one, and so do AA Papers 2 and 3 – only AA Paper 1 is calculator-free. Yet many students use a powerful GDC like a basic calculator and lose time and marks. A few hours spent learning the right features can be worth more than weeks of extra content revision.

Choosing a model? See our IB maths calculator buying guide. Whatever you use, check with your school that it meets the IB's calculator rules for exams – calculators with computer algebra systems (CAS) are not permitted.

The features every IB student should master

Graphing

  • Graph functions and set a sensible window quickly.
  • Find intersections, zeros, maxima and minima from the graph.
  • Use a table to explore values and spot patterns (very useful in Paper 3).

Solving

  • Equation and polynomial solvers.
  • Simultaneous equations (and, for AI HL, matrices).

Calculus

  • The numerical derivative at a point.
  • Definite integrals – including areas and, for kinematics, distance using |v|.

Statistics and probability

  • One- and two-variable statistics; regression with r.
  • Binomial and normal distribution functions, including the inverse normal.
  • For AI: χ² and t-tests.

Finance

  • The TVM (financial) solver for compound interest, depreciation and loans.

Writing GDC working so it earns marks

The markscheme cannot see your calculator screen. A bare answer that is wrong earns nothing; a clear setup can still earn method marks. Write:

  • What you solved or graphed: "Solving 3e^(0.2x) = x + 5 graphically, x = 4.21".
  • The model and parameters for distributions: "X ~ N(170, 8²), P(X > 180) = 0.106".
  • Inputs for the TVM solver: "N = 60, I% = 7.5, PV = 500000, FV = 0, P/Y = C/Y = 12".
  • A sketch when a question asks for one – copy the key features (intercepts, turning points, asymptotes) with labels.

Avoid writing calculator syntax like "normalcdf(180, 1E99, 170, 8)" as your only working – write the mathematical statement.

Settings that cause silent errors

  • Radians vs degrees. Calculus and most trig in AA uses radians; triangle problems often use degrees. Check before every paper.
  • Rounding. Give final answers to three significant figures unless told otherwise, but keep full accuracy in intermediate steps – use stored values, not rounded ones.
  • Window settings that hide an intersection or a second solution.
  • Stat plots or old lists left on from earlier work.

How to practise GDC skills

  • Learn each feature with its topic, not all at once before the exam.
  • Make a one-page GDC checklist for your own model – keystrokes for each feature.
  • Do Paper 2 questions twice: once quickly with the GDC, once writing the full working as for the examiner.
  • For AA students, keep practising Paper 1 by hand – the GDC must not replace algebra skills.

How Maths Bodhi helps

We teach the GDC on the student's own model, topic by topic:

  • A short check of which features the student already uses – and which they don't know exist.
  • Feature practice inside real IB questions, with the written working the markscheme expects.
  • A personal GDC checklist built with the student.
  • For AA students, a balance of no-calculator fluency and GDC method.

Frequently asked questions

Which IB maths papers allow a calculator?
A graphic display calculator is required in all AI papers and in AA Papers 2 and 3. AA Paper 1 allows no calculator.
How should I write GDC working in IB maths?
Write what you solved or graphed, the model and parameters for distributions, or the TVM inputs – then the answer. Avoid giving calculator syntax as your only working.
Are CAS calculators allowed in IB maths exams?
No. Calculators with computer algebra systems are not permitted. Check your model with your school before exams.
