IB DP Schools in Gurgaon: A Maths Guide for Parents (AA, AI, SL and HL)

A parent's guide to IB Diploma maths in Gurgaon – which schools are listed by the IB as offering the DP, how maths works in the Diploma, the questions to ask your school, and how families moving from CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE can prepare.

IB DP Schools in Gurgaon: A Maths Guide for Parents (AA, AI, SL and HL)

Gurgaon has one of India's largest groups of IB World Schools. For families choosing or starting the IB Diploma Programme (DP) – usually Grades 11 and 12 – maths is often the subject that raises the most questions: which course, which level, and how different it is from CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE. This guide brings the answers together, with links to our detailed guides on every part of DP maths.

Gurgaon schools listed by the IB as offering the Diploma Programme

The IB's own school directory lists at least these schools in Gurgaon (and on the Gurgaon–Sohna Road) as authorised to offer the DP. We list them alphabetically and neutrally – this is not a ranking, and Maths Bodhi is independent and not affiliated with any school.

How maths works in the IB Diploma

Every DP student takes one maths course, at Standard (SL) or Higher Level (HL):

  • Analysis and Approaches (AA) – algebraic and abstract, with an emphasis on proof and argument.
  • Applications and Interpretation (AI) – modelling, statistics and technology; every AI paper requires a graphic display calculator.

Assessment in the current course: SL has two papers and the internal assessment (IA); HL adds Paper 3. The IA – a written mathematical exploration – is worth 20% at both levels. A new syllabus starts teaching in August 2027 with first exams in May 2029. Our posts on AA vs AI, HL vs SL and the new syllabus explain each choice.

Questions to ask your school about DP maths

  1. Which courses and levels are offered? Not every school runs all four (AA SL, AA HL, AI SL, AI HL) every year.
  2. How is the course and level decided – by the student, by a test, or by Grade 10 results?
  3. Which calculator model does the school use? Learning on the same GDC as your teacher saves time.
  4. When are IA deadlines and mock exams? Plan tuition around them, not against them.
  5. Can a student change level (HL to SL or the reverse), and until when?

Moving into the DP from CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE

Many Gurgaon students join the DP in Grade 11 from another board. The maths is not "harder" – it is different:

  • From CBSE or ICSE: strong technique, but less used to explaining reasoning, using a GDC, and writing an IA. Command terms ("show that", "justify", "hence") need practice.
  • From IGCSE Extended: good exam technique, but AA HL in particular moves quickly into proof, calculus and complex numbers.
  • From IB MYP: familiar with inquiry and criteria, but often needs more algebraic fluency and timed-exam practice.

A short summer plan before Grade 11 helps a lot – see our summer plan before IB DP maths and moving from MYP to DP.

How Maths Bodhi supports IB DP students across Gurgaon

DP students rarely need "more maths". They need the *right* help at the right time: foundations in Grade 11, the IA early in Grade 12, then paper practice before May. Our process:

  1. A free demo with a diagnostic – we find where marks are being lost, not just which chapter is "hard".
  2. A written plan matched to your school's calendar: IA deadlines, mocks and the May exams.
  3. One-to-one sessions at home or online – concept first, then IB-style questions marked against the markscheme.
  4. IA support within the rules: topic choice, understanding the maths, feedback on drafts against the criteria. The work stays the student's own.
  5. Monthly progress reviews with parents.

Frequently asked questions

Which schools in Gurgaon offer the IB Diploma Programme?
The IB's directory lists at least 13, including Amity Global School, DPS International, Excelsior American School, GD Goenka World School, Heritage International Xperiential School, Kunskapsskolan Gurgaon, Lancers International School, Pathways School Gurgaon, Pathways World School, Scottish High International School, Shiv Nadar School Gurugram, Suncity School and The Shri Ram School (Moulsari). Confirm current details with the IB directory and the school.
What maths courses are there in the IB Diploma?
Two courses – Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) – each at Standard Level or Higher Level. Students take one.
Is IB DP maths harder than CBSE maths?
It is different rather than simply harder: more explanation of reasoning, regular graphing calculator use, and a 20% internal assessment. Students moving from CBSE or ICSE usually need practice with IB command terms and the IA.
