"What percentage do I need for a 7?" is one of the most searched questions about IB maths – and one of the most misunderstood. There is no fixed number. Understanding *why* helps students plan better and worry less.
How an IB maths grade is built
Your final grade (1–7) comes from weighted components:
| Component | SL weighting | HL weighting |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 40% | 30% |
| Paper 2 | 40% | 30% |
| Paper 3 | – | 20% |
| Internal assessment (exploration) | 20% | 20% |
The IA is marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. The papers are marked externally. The weighted total is then converted to a grade using grade boundaries.
Why there is no fixed "7 percentage"
- Boundaries are set after each exam session, once the papers have been marked, so that a grade represents the same standard even if one year's papers were harder.
- They differ by course and level – AA SL, AA HL, AI SL and AI HL each have their own.
- They can differ between sessions (May and November) and between papers in the same session.
So a boundary that applied in one year is a guide, not a promise. Your school's IB coordinator receives the boundaries for each session; your maths teacher can tell you how recent ones looked for your course.
What this means for your preparation
- Aim above the line, not at it. If recent boundaries for a 7 sat at a certain level, plan to be comfortably above it in mocks.
- Treat the IA as 20% you control. It is finished before the exams, with time to improve drafts. A strong IA takes pressure off the papers.
- Know your weakest paper. If Paper 1 (no calculator in AA) is costing you, that is where an extra mark is cheapest.
- For HL, don't neglect Paper 3. At 20%, it can lift or sink a grade. See our Paper 3 guide.
- Use mocks properly. Convert mock scores to weighted totals and compare with recent boundaries – then decide what to fix.
Predicted grades
Schools give predicted grades for university applications, usually in the autumn of Year 2. They are based on the student's work and mocks, not on boundaries. A strong IA draft and solid mock results are the best way to support a higher prediction. The IB diploma total
Each of the six subjects is graded 1–7, and the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge together add up to 3 points – a maximum of 45. Maths is one subject, but for many university courses (engineering, economics, computer science) it is the grade admissions teams look at first.
How Maths Bodhi helps students plan for a 6 or 7
We use the grade structure to plan, not to guess:
- A mock-score analysis: weighted totals per paper and the IA, so the student sees exactly where marks are cheapest to gain.
- IA support that keeps the work the student's own: topic choice, feedback on drafts against the criteria, and checking the maths.
- Paper-specific practice – no-calculator fluency, GDC method, and HL Paper 3 problem-solving.
- A clear plan to May, reviewed every month.
