IB DP Maths Year 1 Exams and Mocks: How to Prepare and What the Results Mean

End-of-Year-1 exams and early mocks shape predicted grades and confidence. How to prepare for an IB maths Year 1 exam, how to read the results without panic, and how to turn them into a plan for Year 2.

IB DP Maths Year 1 Exams and Mocks: How to Prepare and What the Results Mean

For most DP students, the end-of-Year-1 exam (and in some schools, an early mock) is the first full test of IB maths under exam conditions. The results matter: teachers use them, along with class work, when forming predicted grades for university applications in Year 2. Preparing well – and reading the results sensibly – can change the whole second year.

Why Year 1 exams matter

  • They are often the first IB-style papers students sit, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 formats.
  • Teachers use them as evidence for predicted grades, together with class tests and the IA.
  • They show where the foundations are weak, while there is still time to fix them.

How to prepare (6 weeks out)

Weeks 1–2: map the gaps

  • List every topic covered in Year 1.
  • Rate each one honestly (secure / shaky / lost), using class test results.
  • Start an error log if you don't have one.

Weeks 3–4: fix and practise

  • Tackle "lost" topics first, then "shaky" ones.
  • Do past-paper questions by topic, marked with the markscheme.
  • For AA: daily no-calculator practice for Paper 1.
  • For AI: practise GDC skills inside real questions.

Weeks 5–6: exam conditions

  • Full timed papers – at least one of each type.
  • Review every lost mark: concept, algebra, reading, GDC or time?
  • Rest well in the final days.

Reading the results without panic

A disappointing Year 1 result is common, especially for students who joined from CBSE, ICSE or IGCSE. Look beneath the number:

  • Which paper lost the most marks – Paper 1 (no calculator in AA) or Paper 2?
  • Which topics – and are they foundations (algebra, functions) or new content?
  • What type of error – careless, method, or not knowing how to start?
  • Did you run out of time?

Each answer points to a different fix. "I'm bad at maths" is not a diagnosis.

Turning results into a Year 2 plan

  1. Fix foundations over the summer – algebra, functions and trigonometry feed every Year 2 topic.
  2. Plan the IA early – it's 20% you control. See the IA criteria explained.
  3. Talk to the teacher about the predicted grade and what would change it.
  4. Set a target per paper for the next mock.
  5. Review monthly: are the targets moving?

If the results raise the question of changing level, read should you change from HL to SL? before deciding.

How Maths Bodhi helps after Year 1 exams

  • A results analysis session: marks by paper, topic and error type.
  • A summer plan that repairs foundations and prepares for Year 2 topics.
  • IA planning and understanding of the maths – the work stays the student's own.
  • Monthly reviews with parents through Year 2.
