Choosing a JEE Maths Home Tutor in Gurgaon: A Practical Checklist for Parents

What to ask before hiring a JEE maths home tutor in Gurgaon – subject depth, how mocks and error logs are handled, balancing boards and JEE, travel and timings – plus how a demo class should look.

Choosing a JEE Maths Home Tutor in Gurgaon: A Practical Checklist for Parents

Gurgaon families have many options for JEE preparation – large coaching centres, online courses and one-to-one home tuition. Home tuition works best when it is chosen for a clear reason: a student who needs individual attention on maths, has gaps from Class 11, or wants to combine JEE with board preparation without long commutes.

Here is the checklist we suggest parents use, whether or not they choose Maths Bodhi.

1. Subject depth at JEE level

Ask the tutor to solve a JEE-style problem in front of you or during the demo, and to explain it. A good JEE maths tutor should be comfortable across the official syllabus – from complex numbers and conic sections to integral calculus and differential equations (see the full list on our JEE Main syllabus guide) – and, if your child is aiming for IITs, at JEE Advanced depth.

2. Knowledge of the current exam rules

The tutor should know the current pattern without hesitation. For example, under the official 2026 rules JEE Main maths has 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical questions, and wrong answers lose a mark in both sections (our JEE Main pattern guide explains this). A tutor who still says "numericals have no negative marking" is working from outdated information.

3. A plan, not just weekly classes

Ask to see how the year will be structured: which units in which months, when full mocks start, and how the January and April sessions are handled. A tutor should be able to sketch this in the first meeting.

4. How mistakes are tracked

The fastest JEE improvement usually comes from analysing mistakes. Ask how mock tests are reviewed and whether the student keeps an error log. If the answer is "we solve more questions", probe further.

5. Balance with board exams

Most JEE aspirants also have Class 12 boards. The tutor should plan for both – board-style written answers as well as fast objective practice. See our guide to preparing for JEE Main and CBSE boards together.

6. Practical fit in Gurgaon

Home tuition depends on reliable timing. Check:

  • which sectors and societies the tutor can travel to, and how often
  • session length and frequency in the months before the January session
  • whether online sessions are available when travel is not practical

Maths Bodhi tutors cover all of Gurgaon, from the Golf Course Road and Sohna Road sectors to New Gurgaon; see our Gurgaon areas page.

7. A demo class that shows how they teach

A useful demo class should include a short diagnostic of the student's level, one topic taught properly, and a clear suggestion of what to work on first. It should not just be a sales conversation.

Questions to ask in the first meeting

  1. Which JEE units do students usually find hardest, and how do you teach them?
  2. How will you find out where my child is now – a test, a conversation, past marks?
  3. What will the next three months look like, unit by unit?
  4. When do full mock tests start, and who analyses them?
  5. How do you handle Class 11 gaps for a student who is now in Class 12?
  6. How will you balance board answers and JEE speed?
  7. How will you report progress to parents, and how often?
  8. What happens if a session has to be cancelled or moved?

Red flags

  • Promises of a specific rank or percentile.
  • No plan beyond "we will complete the syllabus".
  • No interest in the student's school timetable or board exam.
  • Unable to explain the current JEE pattern or marking.
