CBSE Class 11 Maths: Units, Marks and the Topics Assessed Only Internally

CBSE Class 11 maths for 2026–27: the five units and their marks, the list of topics assessed only through internal assessment, how the 20 internal marks work, and why Class 11 matters so much for Class 12 and JEE.

CBSE Class 11 Maths: Units, Marks and the Topics Assessed Only Internally

Class 11 maths is where many students feel the jump in difficulty for the first time. It is also the foundation for Class 12 board maths and for JEE. Knowing exactly how the year is assessed helps students spend their effort well.

This guide follows the official CBSE Classes XI–XII Mathematics curriculum for 2026–27. The full table and sources are on our CBSE Class 11 Maths guide.

The five units and their marks

The Class 11 year-end theory paper is 80 marks and 3 hours, set by the school:

  • Sets and Functions – 23 marks: sets; relations and functions; trigonometric functions
  • Algebra – 25 marks: complex numbers and quadratic equations; linear inequalities; permutations and combinations; binomial theorem; sequence and series
  • Coordinate Geometry – 12 marks: straight lines; conic sections; introduction to three-dimensional geometry
  • Calculus – 8 marks: limits and derivatives
  • Statistics and Probability – 12 marks: statistics; probability

Algebra and Sets and Functions together carry 48 of the 80 marks.

Topics assessed only through internal assessment

The 2026–27 curriculum lists topics that are assessed only formatively – through classwork and internal assessment – and are not part of the year-end summative exam. They include:

  • practical problems on union and intersection of two sets
  • composition of functions
  • general solutions of trigonometric equations
  • the principle of mathematical induction
  • the polar form of complex numbers, the fundamental theorem of algebra, and quadratics in the complex number system
  • graphical solution of linear inequalities in two variables
  • general and middle terms in a binomial expansion
  • the sums Σk, Σk² and Σk³
  • normal form and general equation of a line
  • the section formula in three dimensions
  • the chain rule
  • random experiments, outcomes and sample space

An important caution

"Not in the year-end exam" does not mean "not needed". Several of these are essential later:

  • The chain rule is used constantly in Class 12 calculus and JEE. For example, the derivative of sin(3x) is 3cos(3x) – that "3" comes from the chain rule.
  • General solutions of trigonometric equations and Σk²-type sums belong to trigonometry and sequences and series – both JEE Main units – so JEE aspirants should not skip them.
  • Mathematical induction is a standard proof technique in higher mathematics.

Students heading for JEE or Class 12 maths should learn these properly in Class 11, even though the school exam does not test them.

How the 20 internal marks work

  • Periodic tests: 10 marks, using the best two of three tests.
  • Mathematics activities: 10 marks – students complete any 10 activities from the NCERT lab manual, with marks for the activities and record (5), a year-end activity test (3) and a viva-voce (2).

These marks are secured during the year, which makes them some of the most controllable marks in Class 11.

Why Class 11 matters so much

  • For Class 12: Calculus in Class 11 is only 8 marks, but limits and derivatives lead straight into Class 12, where the Calculus unit is worth 35 of 80 board marks.
  • For JEE: many JEE Main units – complex numbers, sequences and series, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem and conic sections – are Class 11 topics. See our JEE Main syllabus guide.

A simple term plan

  • April to July: sets, relations and functions, trigonometric functions; begin complex numbers.
  • August to October: linear inequalities, permutations and combinations, binomial theorem, sequences and series; straight lines.
  • November to December: conic sections, introduction to 3D geometry, limits and derivatives.
  • January to March: statistics and probability, activities and viva, then revision for the school exam.

Frequently asked questions

Is the chain rule in the CBSE Class 11 maths exam?
In the 2026–27 curriculum, the chain rule is listed among topics assessed only through internal assessment, not the year-end exam. It is still essential for Class 12 calculus and JEE.
How many marks is each unit in CBSE Class 11 maths?
Sets and Functions 23, Algebra 25, Coordinate Geometry 12, Calculus 8, and Statistics and Probability 12, for 80 theory marks.
How is internal assessment marked in Class 11 maths?
20 marks: periodic tests (best two of three) for 10 marks, and mathematics activities for 10 marks (activities and record 5, year-end activity test 3, viva-voce 2).
