CBSE is the most common board among the families we teach in DLF Phase 1 and Phase 2. The 2026–27 session brought real changes to CBSE maths – a new Class 9 curriculum and two board exams for Class 10 – so this is a good year to check that your child's tutor is up to date. Here is a class-by-class plan.
What changed for 2026–27
- Class 9 has a redesigned curriculum and a new NCERT textbook, *Ganita Manjari* (Parts I and II), with new topics such as sequences and progressions and an introduction to probability. There is also an optional 25-mark Mathematics Advanced paper.
- Class 10 now has two board exams: a compulsory one in February and an optional second exam in May.
- Class 10 students in 2026–27 can still choose Standard or Basic maths.
- Class 12: calculus carries 35 of the 80 theory marks – the single biggest unit.

Class 9: build the foundation properly
Class 9 is a school exam, not a board exam, but it decides how easy Class 10 will be. A tutor should:
- Make algebra (polynomials, identities, linear equations in two variables) automatic.
- Teach geometry proofs properly – reasons for every step, not just the answer.
- Cover the new topics (progressions, probability) carefully, since older guides and question banks may not include them.
- Support internal assessment: tests, portfolio and lab activities make up 20 marks.
Typical frequency: two sessions a week.
Class 10: plan for two board exams
With a compulsory exam in February and an optional one in May, plan the year in three parts:
- April to November: finish the syllabus with NCERT and exemplar questions, chapter tests every two or three weeks.
- December to February: CBSE sample papers under time, error logs, and fixing weak chapters.
- After February: decide with your child whether the May exam is worth taking to improve the score, and plan accordingly.
Typical frequency: two or three sessions a week, more before February. See our Class 10 maths tutor guide for a full term plan.
Class 11: the bridge to Class 12 and JEE
Class 11 introduces functions, trigonometry, limits and derivatives, and more. Some topics are assessed only internally, but students still need them in Class 12 – so a tutor should not skip them. Students also preparing for JEE need a deeper approach; see JEE maths tutor in the DLF phases.
Class 12: calculus first
Because calculus carries 35 of 80 theory marks, a sensible Class 12 plan:
- Secure differentiation and integration early, with plenty of practice.
- Practise application questions (maxima and minima, area under curves) in full board-style working.
- Start sample papers by December.
How a CBSE maths home tutor should teach
- NCERT first, then sample papers. Board questions are built on NCERT; "harder" books come later, if at all.
- Method marks matter. CBSE marking rewards correct steps and clear presentation, so the tutor should insist on complete, well-set-out working.
- Error logs. Keeping a short list of repeated mistakes is the fastest way to stop losing easy marks.
- Honest progress checks against school test results.
