CBSE Class 12 Maths: Why Calculus (35 of 80 Marks) Decides the Result

In the 2026–27 CBSE Class 12 curriculum, calculus carries 35 of the 80 board marks across five chapters. How to plan those chapters, worked examples of where marks are lost, and how the rest of the paper fits around them.

CBSE Class 12 Maths: Why Calculus (35 of 80 Marks) Decides the Result

In the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics curriculum for 2026–27, one unit stands out: Calculus carries 35 of the 80 theory marks – about 44% of the board paper. No other unit comes close. Planning the year around that fact is the simplest way to protect a Class 12 maths result.

The full unit-wise table and sources are on our CBSE Class 12 Maths guide.

The five calculus chapters

The Calculus unit covers:

  1. Continuity and Differentiability
  2. Applications of Derivatives
  3. Integrals
  4. Application of the Integrals
  5. Differential Equations

The other units share the remaining 45 marks: Vectors and Three-Dimensional Geometry 14, Algebra (matrices and determinants) 10, Relations and Functions 8, Probability 8 and Linear Programming 5.

Why calculus is worth more than its 35 marks

Calculus chapters build on each other. Weak differentiation makes applications of derivatives hard; weak integration makes area and differential equations hard. A gap early in the unit spreads across all five chapters – so time spent getting continuity and differentiation solid pays back across the whole unit.

Three places students commonly lose calculus marks

1. Chain rule slips

Differentiate y = sin(x²). The correct answer is dy/dx = 2x cos(x²). A common slip is writing cos(x²) and forgetting the derivative of the inside function. In a board paper, that loses the final answer even if the method was otherwise right.

2. Forgetting the constant or the limits

For ∫ 2x dx the answer is x² + C. Leaving out C costs marks in indefinite integrals. In definite integrals the opposite error is common: ∫₀² 2x dx = [x²]₀² = 4 − 0 = 4, and students sometimes stop at x² without substituting the limits.

3. Area questions without a sketch

For the area between y = x² and the x-axis from x = 0 to x = 3, the answer is ∫₀³ x² dx = 9. Many area errors come from not sketching the curves first and integrating over the wrong interval or subtracting the wrong way round. A quick sketch is part of the method, and board markers reward clear working.

A year plan built around calculus

This is the order we generally follow with Class 12 students; adjust it to your school's timetable.

  • April to July: relations and functions, inverse trigonometric functions, matrices and determinants; begin continuity and differentiability.
  • August to October: applications of derivatives, integrals and their applications, differential equations – the heart of the year.
  • November to December: vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability; complete internal assessment.
  • January to February: timed sample papers with a calculus-first revision order.

Don't neglect the rest of the paper

Calculus is the largest unit, but Vectors and 3D Geometry (14 marks) is usually quicker to secure, and Relations and Functions, Algebra, Probability and Linear Programming together add 31 marks of shorter, more predictable questions. A strong result needs both.

Also remember the 20 marks of internal assessment – periodic tests (best two of three) for 10 marks, and maths activities for 10. These are in the student's control well before the board exam.

If your child is also preparing for JEE

The same calculus chapters sit at the centre of JEE Main. Our guide to preparing for JEE Main maths and CBSE boards together shows how to plan both.
