In Gurgaon, many students move into the IB Diploma in Grade 11 after studying CBSE or ICSE up to Grade 10. They are often strong at maths – and are still surprised by how different IB maths feels in the first term. The good news: the gap is about style and skills, not intelligence, and it can be closed quickly with the right preparation.
What really changes
| CBSE / ICSE (to Grade 10) | IB DP maths | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | Many routine, textbook-style | More unfamiliar, multi-part, in context |
| Calculator | Little or none | GDC required (except AA Paper 1) |
| Answers | Final answer and steps | Reasoning, justification and interpretation too |
| Assessment | Board exam and school tests | Papers plus a 20% written exploration (IA) |
| Language | Short instructions | Command terms: "show that", "hence", "justify" |
The five skills to build
- Algebraic fluency at speed. CBSE and ICSE students usually have good technique; IB questions demand it fast and in combination with other topics.
- Reading command terms. "Show that" means the answer is given – every step must be shown. "Hence" means use the previous part. See IB command terms.
- Using a graphing calculator – a new skill for most students, needed for Paper 2 and all AI papers. See GDC skills.
- Explaining and interpreting. Writing a sentence about what a result means, or why a method works.
- Independent investigation for the IA – a piece of maths you choose and write up yourself.
Choosing course and level
The DP has two maths courses, AA and AI, each at SL or HL. Strong CBSE/ICSE students often lean towards AA, but the right choice depends on university plans and interests. Check course requirements for the degrees your child is considering, and read AA vs AI and HL vs SL. The full picture is in the IB DP maths guide for Gurgaon families.
A summer-to-first-term plan
Summer before Grade 11 (4–6 weeks)
- Revise Grade 9–10 algebra: indices, surds, quadratics, factorising.
- Learn functions properly: domain, range, graphs, transformations.
- Get the school's GDC model and learn the basics.
- Try a few IB-style questions to get used to the format.
First term
- Keep pace with the class from day one – IB topics build fast.
- Start an error log.
- Practise command terms and written explanations.
- Ask for help early if a topic feels shaky; small gaps grow quickly.

Common first-term surprises
- "I knew the method but lost marks" – usually missing reasoning or wrong format.
- "The questions don't look like the textbook" – IB questions mix topics.
- "I ran out of time" – IB papers reward fluency.
- "What is the IA?" – a 20% component that needs planning from Year 1.

Frequently asked questions
- Is it hard to move from CBSE to IB maths?
- It is a change of style more than difficulty. Students need to build speed in algebra, read IB command terms, use a graphing calculator, explain their reasoning, and plan an internal assessment.
- Should a CBSE student take IB maths AA or AI?
- It depends on university plans and interests. Many strong CBSE and ICSE students choose AA, but check the requirements of the degrees being considered before deciding.
- How can my child prepare for IB maths in the summer before Grade 11?
- Revise Grade 9–10 algebra, learn functions and graph transformations, get comfortable with the school's GDC, and try a few IB-style questions.
