IGCSE Maths Tutor in DLF Phase 4 and Phase 5: Core vs Extended, and How to Prepare

For Cambridge IGCSE families in DLF Phase 4 and Phase 5 – how Core and Extended differ, how the four 0580 papers work, the calculator rules, and a two-year plan a good IGCSE maths tutor should follow.

IGCSE Maths Tutor in DLF Phase 4 and Phase 5: Core vs Extended, and How to Prepare

Many students in DLF Phase 4 and Phase 5 study Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (syllabus 0580) at schools across Gurgaon. IGCSE maths is fair but unforgiving: two papers, strict calculator rules, and a tier decision that limits the grades a student can get. This guide explains what parents need to know and what a good IGCSE maths tutor should do.

Core or Extended: the decision that sets the ceiling

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has two tiers:

  • Core is intended for students targeting grades C–G. Core candidates take Papers 1 and 3 and can be awarded C to G.
  • Extended includes all the Core content plus more, and is for students targeting A*–C. Extended candidates take Papers 2 and 4 and can be awarded **A* to E**.

So a Core student cannot get above a C, however well they do. If your child is close to the border, a few months of focused tuition can make Extended realistic. Schools usually decide the tier in Grade 10 – talk to the school early.

The four papers

PaperTierTimeMarksWeightingCalculator
Paper 1Core1 h 30 min8050%Not allowed
Paper 3Core1 h 30 min8050%Scientific calculator required
Paper 2Extended2 h10050%Not allowed
Paper 4Extended2 h10050%Scientific calculator required

Half the marks come from a non-calculator paper. Students who have relied on a calculator since Grade 6 often struggle here – fractions, negative numbers, surds and standard form by hand all need practice.

On calculators: a scientific calculator with trigonometric functions is strongly recommended, and algebraic or graphical calculators are not permitted.

The syllabus for 2028–2030 has been published, and Cambridge says there are no significant changes that affect teaching – the papers, timings and marks stay the same.

A two-year plan (Grades 9 and 10)

Grade 9

  • Secure number work without a calculator: fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form.
  • Build algebra steadily: expanding, factorising, solving equations, rearranging formulae.
  • Start geometry and trigonometry, with clear diagrams and units.
  • Short timed sets every few weeks, so exam pace is never a surprise.

Grade 10

  • Finish the syllabus by the middle of the year if possible.
  • Past papers by topic, then full papers under time.
  • Separate practice for the non-calculator paper and the calculator paper.
  • Review every mock: which questions lost marks and why (method, accuracy or reading the question).

What a good IGCSE maths tutor does

  • Knows the 0580 syllabus and command words – "show that", "give your answer to 3 significant figures", "write down".
  • Teaches exam presentation: working shown clearly, correct rounding, units, and answers in the required form.
  • Uses Cambridge past papers and mark schemes, so the student sees how marks are actually awarded.
  • Gives honest tier advice based on evidence, not hope.
